Symptoms of Heatstroke

First Aid for Heatstroke Patients

If you find someone suffering from heatstroke or someone showing signs of the disease, you should follow these steps:

  1. Take the symptomatic person to a shady area with good ventilation or an air-conditioned room, and prevent crowding.
  2. Have the patient lie flat with both feet elevated above the level of the heart.
  3. Loosen your clothing or remove outer clothing.
  4. Use a cold wet cloth or ice pack on the head, neck, body, armpits, and various joints, along with using a fan to help cool down. However, do not pour extremely cold water on the body as it may cause shock.
  5. If the patient is not unconscious, give them plenty of water to drink, sip it slowly, and rush them to the hospital as soon as possible.

Easy ways to reduce risk and avoid heatstroke

  • Avoid outdoor activities or places with very hot and unventilated temperatures.
  • Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Wear light-colored, airy clothing that wicks away heat or provides protection from the sun.
  • Before leaving the house, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 and do not apply too thickly. Wear a hat or use an umbrella to protect yourself from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages.

Importantly, we can take care of and protect ourselves by being observant. If we need to go out and do outdoor activities, we should prepare well and follow the advice mentioned above to reduce the risk of heatstroke.
