Alderweireld announces retirement at end of season.

Toby Alderweireld, a defender for Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Jupiler League, has taken to social media to announce his retirement at the end of the 2024-25 season due to health issues.

It all started with a statement on the club’s website that the 36-year-old player had to miss the entire season due to a right hamstring injury, which caused his contract to expire.

“I never expected this before… I still don’t know how to put it into words,” Alderweireld said on Instagram. 

“What I’m going to do now is find every way to get back in this beautiful jersey.” 

“To finally be captain of the best club in the world… but it’s a tough battle against time, and I know I’m not on the winning side.” 

“I would like to send this message to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart and for the support I have received. You guys are amazing.” 

It was the end of his professional football career after nearly two decades, and he was also struggling with an irregular heartbeat. 

Overall 32 games in all competitions this season, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists.
